Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsWe have a Defever 60 built in 1980, PALADIN. Previous to
last winter, our insurance company had told us to avoid
having any repairs done in Georgia or South Carolina
because most repair yards were either incompetent or
crooks. We wintered PALADIN in Bohicket, SC last year.
Bohicket is about seven miles off the ICW and
thirty-five miles south of Charleston. If you're going
to stop anywhere between Charleston and Beaufort,
Bohicket is pretty much it. Bohicket Creek has a
ferocious current, four knots or so. The marina is OK,
docks need some attention, but it has two really good
restaurants.
Anyway in the course of wintering there from last
November to this May, we had about $5K worth of work
done by Jeffries Marine, run by Captain Lane Jeffries.
Lane is wonderfully knowledgable and has all sorts of
sub-contractors at his fingertips. Our work ranged from
routine preventive maintenance to some complicated
mechanical and electrical repairs. Lane got it all done
on time and within estimate and it all worked fine when
we left. If something is beyond his or his subs
expertise, he will tell you. Not only that, he stays in
touch, calls and e-mails frequently with status and
up-dates. Leave a voice mail message and you get a call
back that day. Although his offices are in Bohicket, he
also services Charleston. Contact info is:
