Hi there Malcolm:
You might reconsider the performance and cost benefits of sail assisted power cats using a kite from Dave Culp at Kiteship. http://www.kiteship.com/outleader.php
To quote from Dave' web page:
"KiteShip offers the world's first and only performance-based sail
guarantee. Our kites make your boat faster or we will buy back the
kite. We have distributors throughout the world, ready to
demonstrate the product on your boat, to your schedule. We have put
dozens of these exciting sails aboard boats from 24 foot racing
trimarans and day-sailing yachts to 75 foot ocean racers and
offshore powerboats in sizes from 30 to 420 sq meters."

Reply to Tim Askins.
Dear Tim,
Very difficult question to answer as it depends very much on the cost of
diesel fuel and how automated you make the rig.............

Aventure Catamarans is already into kite-assisted
power cats, as explained by Tim Jordaan:
<<<
About Motor Sailing.
It is correct to say that it is mainly for pursuing long distances.
We ship our Aventure Power Boats world wide and
it is now costing a lot of money and damage in
many
cases.
Therefore we have made a few modifications to
our rudders, fitted feathering props, a
Sparecraft mast, 4 winches, 2 asymetrical
spinnakers and 1x 70 sq meter experimental kite.
The total price is $32.500, ($8.000 less than the shipping.)
The next time round it will cost only $3.000, the
amount it cost me to to ship the mast and sails
back to the shipyard for the next boat.
The interesting aspect of my findings is that the
boat can go very quickly under
an asymetrical spinnaker only, set from 500 off
the the wind through to 1400 therefore saving
good money, and as we all know an asymetrical
spinnakers is not a train smash to fly,
only a good autopilot and a lot of fun.
Therefore, stepping a simple mast, 3 winches, an
asymetrical spinnaker can really be a great
advantage in the correct conditions, and not a pain.
