Fuel return compared to burn

There has been several emails on this subject of fuel return. I am wondering why this is being discussed and for what purpose. The fuel being used per hour is important but the return amount should not be of importance unless the engine is not operating properly.

Leonard,
I don’t know why the OP was interested, but an engine such as a Detroit that returns a lot of fuel can act as a defacto fuel polisher and transfer pump.

I think the two reasons are consumption analysis and heat.
For accurate consumption, you need to measure the inflow and return, and the temperature effects the measurement.
On pure temperature, I have heard that some people prefer to return their fuel to the day tank rather than the main tanks as the return is much hotter. I presume it’s to limit growth in the main tank, but I don’t fully get it...
On our older NA Perkins, there’s apparently not much return at any time, but I’ve only just bought some gauges to see what is actually going on...
