Dave Fulton, the electric 72's owner, says the
system should give the boat tremendous range. He estimates that when running
seven knots on the 200 horsepower engine, the yacht's 3,030 gallons of fuel
could take it as far as 8,200 miles..."
While I would not say that this is impossible, it certainly stretches the
limits of credibility. It would take about 85 hp to move a boat this large at 7
kts. A normal diesel engine at 85 hp burns about 5 gallons of fuel per hour.
That's 606 hours of running time for a full tank. At 7 kts the boat's range will
be 4242 NM. Dave Fulton needs a new calculator or should stop listening to
Nordhavn's puffery about fuel economy.
