Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsI have learned the following from my recent research on options for
broadband wireless data access in Canada for Verizon users.
For $25 per month you can add Canada to any Verizon data plan. This
will give you 100MB of data while in Canada. If you exceed 100MB you
will be charged an additional $25 for another 100MB. So basically
you will pay $25 per 100MB regardless of the amount you use.
If you plan to use more than 600MB while in Canada, your best bet is
to get a Rogers Wireless prepaid Rocket Stick. Here you pay $150 for
the Rocket Stick (just a USB modem) and then you buy as much data as
you want. You can get 1500MB for $100 and you can add more.
Verizon uses the Bell network in Canada and of course Rogers has
their own network. From the coverage maps it appears that Rogers has
better coverage on the Loop route

I was told about that Canadian data plan rate when I called about the voice
plans for Canada.
Far too expensive for my wallet. We'll make do with finding WiFi.

Is this in addition to the $30 for 2GB Verizon US data charge; except you
don't get the 2GB? Or do you suspend your US data plan and adopt one of the
two overpriced alternatives below?

It is in addition to you US plan. Your US plan is still active. If you were along the St Lawrence Seaway you might connect to a US site and be on your US plan or you might connect to a Canadian site and be on the Canadian plan. Although expensive it is way better than last year.
Rogers does offer a post pay plan that gives you 4GB for about $100 per month, but it is only available to Canadians.

Ralph, Jim and List,
When using WiFi from other sources, make absolutely certain that it is password protected. There are a lot of crooks who clone a marina, restaurant or store's website. You go on line using their cloned site and they are in your computer looking at all your private data!
You would be well advised to buy a Verizon hot spot card - don't know what the current price is, but then it's only 50.00 per month for 3G or 4G where ever there is a cell phone signal.

Check out http://koodomobile.com/
If you have a phone that takes a SIM, is unlocked and is compatible with
the network, Koodo will give you a no-contract SIM card.
You can swap this in and out of your phone at will, and that changes the
number and the network. (BTW, you can set your phone not to connect to
any carrier but your own). If your phone is locked to your carrier,
they will usually unblock it for a fee or you can search on-line for
"unlock XYZ" XYZ being the model of your phone.
Wal*Marts in Canada can sign you up, too, but maybe just for phones.
Koodo has booths in all major shopping centres in Canada and they give
out SIM cards. I don't know if a US address is a hassle. I know a
Canadian credit card is with Tracfone which I use in the US.
Then if you sign up for the Koodo data saver (not advertised), you get
up to 3 GB for up to $32 depending on your usage. If your phone will
act as a hot spot, as most Android phones do, then you can provide
browsing on your laptop and other nearby devices as well. Don't go over
3GB, though, because the cost goes sky-high, but there is real-time
monitoring of usage available on your own page on their website.
Phone plans start at $20 for 50 minutes all over Canada and for $45, you
get unlimited talk anywhere in Canada. I think you have to take at
least the cheapest phone plan for a month to get the SIM. If you pay
The $5 LD saver, LD to the US is something like 5c / minute.
Of course, with that amount of data, and an Android phone or laptop,
you'll likely use Skype for US LD.
I hate phone companies -- all of them -- except Koodo. So far, they
have been great and they don't try to own me.
Hope this helps someone.

What is the problem? You and your better half are on the boating cruise of a lifetime and everyone is happy. That will not remain the case if your better half (yes, and you) can't communicate with the kids and grand-kids - grand-babies; talk to relatives, friends and neighbors, send and receive eMail, send and receive photo's, update your blog or web site, etc.
So, bite the bullet and get a good plan and service that works for you -- in the grand scheme of things, it is a small price to pay to keep everyone happy (a lot less than fuel, booze or wine, dinners out, marinas, sight seeing tours, car rentals, trips back home, winter storage, repairs, and the list goes on.
Communications with family and friends back home is not worth getting "cheap" about!!! Cell phone, eMail and your blog or website are extremely important to your Loop enjoyment! We were amazed by the pass along readership of our daily logs and photo's when we returned home - almost 30 percent more than our distribution list (friends forwarding to friends, sending to other friends) -- students following our trip and giving school reports, etc.
Consider yourselves fortunate. When we did the LOOP in 2002-03-04 our only connectivity was with our cell phone as the modem with 4.2 kb which was used only after 9:00 PM and everyone was told -- no jokes, no photographs - period. Now, you have 3G or 4G almost everywhere.
The America's Great Loop Cruise is the boating experience of a lifetime -- you will be telling stories about your trip and experiences for the rest of your lives. Keep a daily log and lots of photographs so you won't forget anything. ENJOY YOUR CRUISE and share it with those you love and care about. We receive eMails from "nubees" telling us that they have gained valuable knowledge from our logs, photos, articles, etc. on our website -- very worthwhile and rewarding to say the least.
