I posted this question on the PDQ forum, but I thought I'd ask it here
as well. I have been discussing upgrading to Racor 500 filters, which I
have decided to do. Now,
I'd like to ask a somewhat related question. Does anyone use any fuel
additives or biocides in their diesel tanks? Opinions?
Thanks again,
Ben

Solitrol! Best stuff I've ever tried. Reduces smoke, faster starting,
preserves and enhances fuel, keeps injectors clean. I own a 1968 Monk Sr.
long distance trawler. With 500 gallons of fuel I can go 3 years without
fueling with the local cruising we do,[2000+ mi. range], so fuel
preservative is a must. A bottle of Solitrol treats 500 Gal. for less than
$15. Even the furnace runs better. DS in Seattle.

Am I correct in an assumption that this for Diesel only?
If so, do they make a similar product for gasoline?

This may actually refer to Soltron Enzyme Fuel Treatment, from Solpower
Corp. (www.solpower.com). I've occasionally added Soltron to my bio-diesel
as well as petro-diesel in my 2001 Volkswagen Golf TDI, and it performs well
enough. Fuel consumption improves slightly, and visible exhaust smoke
(already minimal) decreases. At $14.95 for 16 ounces, it's more expensive
than more widely-available additives such as PowerService's Diesel Fuel
Supplement and Cetane Boost ($4.95 for 32 ounces at Wal-Mart, though
admittedly the latter only treats 100 gallons). Importantly, however,
Soltron does not claim to prevent low-temperature gelling, while
PowerService guarantees to do so -- a consideration for those of us
operating or storing fuel at low temps.
