Any experience with Navionics electronic charts?

Researching charts for our upcoming trip, I'm astounded that Navionics can
provide a single chip for Baja, Central America, North coast of South
America and the Windward Islands, all for $199.  However, there is some
"fine print".  It looks like I need to purchase their proprietary card
reader, at a cost of $300.  And even then it may not be able to read the XL9
charts, because the FUGAWI web site specifically says it reads Gold and Gold

  • charts.  What's really needed here is a layman's guide to cartography!

The real challenge here is figuring out the best solution for combining a
proprietary chart plotter with a PC for backup.  Hey all you dual Furuno
guys out there, can you share a single chart chip between two chartplotters,
or do you have to buy two chips?

Regardless, can anyone share their experience with Navionics cartography?
Do you find it to be good quality, up to date and accurate?  Thanks!

Scott, C-map has a new chip coming out in April, that includes the Gulf of
Alaska down to the Panama canal and over into the Caribbean. Since I belong
to club C-map I just turn in my chip, Acapulco to Cape Flattery, plus $30.00
and I'll get the new chip. I was planning on purchasing 3 to 4 more chips or
more to cover that large of an area.

Reply: Our vessel is equipped with RayMarine electronics which use Navionics
chart chips.  We have been cruising from China to Borneo for about a year
now and are very pleased with them.  They have remarkable details for out of
the way spots we've visited.

The answer very simply is yes!!  I have 3 furuno's(2 Black Box's in
the pilot house and a 10" up on top), which all can see the two chips
I currently have.
