On June 17, 2021, the Washington State History Museum will open the doors to a new gallery called REMEMBRANCE: The Legacy of Executive Order 9066https://www.washingtonhistory.org/exhibit/the-legacy-of-executive-order-9066-in-washington/, located in the Great Hall of Washington History. This gallery takes a personal look at the intergenerational stories, impacts, and legacy of the incarceration of people of Japanese descent during World War II in the United States.

REMEMBRANCE is the culmination of many years of invaluable partnering and planning. The Society is deeply grateful for the vital contributions of individuals, families, and partner organizations in our community for their roles in bringing REMEMBRANCE to fruition.

The Washington State History Museum offers free admission from 3:00-8:00 PM on Third Thursdays (gallery opening day is Thursday, June 17). All are welcome.

The REMEMBRANCE title wall features this poem (shown in the photo above, shadowed by the metal armature of a Boeing aircraft than hangs in the Great Hall):

Day of Remembrance 2019...Tacoma
by Ted Iwata

Remember or not remember the burden
of a sneak attack that was the "Day of Infamy."

Remember or not remember the past
buried with the sweeping dust of Manzanar, Minidoka...Topaz, Tule Lake... Heart Mountain...

Remember or not remember... the skeletons, old secrets hidden to times past...

Where are the pieces of bone
scattered with the wind blowing?

I was born at Minidoka
with no remembrance of them...

The REMEMBRANCE video and curriculum were generously supported by the Kip Tokuda Washington Civil Liberties Public Education Program via grant funding provided by the Washington State Legislature (RCW 28A.300.410https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fapp.leg.wa.gov%2FRCW%2Fdefault.aspx%3Fcite%3D28A.300.410&data=04%7C01%7CKari.Tally%40k12.wa.us%7Cd16bbb8f40924e2eae8f08d91956bdf0%7Cb2fe5ccf10a546feae45a0267412af7a%7C0%7C0%7C637568682619832375%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=ja1LhHO1Qwftb6T7kjIPPbFddDL9rDyNtssGA%2BjTJpc%3D&reserved=0), through the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI).
