TOUGH REQUIREMENTS FOR TRANS-ATLANTIC RALLY
The Nordhavn Atlantic Rally in 2004 will be open to Nordhavns and
other qualified trawler yachts.
Criteria will be established to define the term "qualified." Some
preliminary requirements are basic. For example, each vessel must
have a range of least 2,500 miles at about 7 knots. Deck fuel will
not be tolerated. Smaller vessels in the rally will probably run
below 7 knots, possibly around 6.5 knots on the 1,800-mile
Bermuda-to-Azores passage.
There will be a requirement for auxiliary propulsion on single engine
vessels--adequate to maintain 4 knots in calm weather. Additionally,
minimums will be developed for glass thickness versus surface area,
which can be rectified with storm plates.
Each vessel will have to pass a survey for condition and suitability
for a long ocean passage. This will include a stability study which
will require an inclining experiment to determine the relationship
between the vertical center of gravity and the vessel's metacenter; a
minimum safe number will be developed. This relatively easy study
will ensure that each vessel has adequate stability for such a voyage.
In a news conference at the Miami International Boat Show on February
14, Pacific Asian Enterprises partner Jim Leishman unveiled details
on his company's Nordhavn Atlantic Rally, an event where organizers
expect up to 30 or more trawler yachts to cross the Atlantic together
in summer 2004.
Although Leishman expects to see more Nordhavns in the rally than
other makes of trawlers, the event is expected to include other
brands as well. Asked how many non-Nordhavns might take part,
Leishman said: "I initially thought that if we had 30 boats, we might
have 10 non-Nordhavns. It's going to be hard for me to turn away
Nordhavns and take on someone else's boat."
However, Leishman noted that PAE and other trawler builders will
benefit if the rally demonstrates that crossing an ocean in a trawler
yacht can be safe and enjoyable for those with moderate experience.
MAY DEPARTURE FOR 3,500-MILE CRUISE TO THE MED
The first-ever, ocean-crossing powerboat rally is a three-leg event:
a 600-mile passage from Rhode Island to Bermuda in May, an 1,800-mile
crossing to Horta on the island of Faial in the Azores, and an
1,100-mile passage to Gibraltar. Participating yachts are expected to
arrive in the Mediterranean before mid-July, leaving the rest of the
summer for Med cruising.
"We hope to end up the summer," Leishman said, "with more powerboats
crossing the Atlantic in 45 days than have crossed in the last 10
years."
"The main thing people enjoy with these rallies is the camaraderie
that exists amongst the participants," he said. "It is proven a very
popular way for people to cruise."
"We have been working hard over the last 15 years to promote the idea
that a properly designed powerboat is a great alternative to a
sailboat," Leishman said, "and we're hoping that this trip will
further illustrate to people that this really is an alternative,
especially for a lot of people who don't have a lifetime of (sailing)
experience."
"We're not sure exactly how many boats will be participating,"
Leishman told reporters, "but we have had a huge response. Our intent
is to provide each group of roughly 10 boats with an escort boat. On
board that escort boat will be mechanical people, a physician,
proprietary spare parts, and more."
The support being offered is a key point for the Nordhavn Atlantic
Rally. Each yacht will be required to meet a stringent list of
requirements and to have a conditional survey before leaving. PAE
staff will be along on the entire trip to offer support on everything
from well-equipped and staffed escorts vessels to customs clearance,
advance arrangements with marinas, duty-free fuel, and pre-arranged
social events.
"Our goal is for participants to pay their fee and get a lot more
back than they paid in terms of services that are going to be
provided," Leishman said. The entry fee has not yet determined.
"A motor boat is a lot different from a sailboat in many respects,
but one thing that's different is that a motor boat can maintain a
real precise speed," according to Leishman. That will allow rally
organizers to group boats together and run them in a tight formation.
"We'll have two groups, which will consist of faster boats and slower
boats. Our smaller boats will be limited in their speeds, probably in
the seven-knot range, while the bigger boats will be happier running
up around 8 or 8.5 knots," he said. "We'll depart from Newport, Rhode
Island, approximately May 20 bound for Bermuda, with the slower fleet
leaving ahead of the faster fleet in hope that both will arrive at
the same time entering into Bermuda." The rally will follow the same
model for the passages to Horta on the island of Faial in the Azores
and to Gibraltar, the gateway to the Mediterranean Sea.
SAFETY IN NUMBERS ACROSS THE POND
"We have found from people cruising in our own boats that a lot more
would be inclined to make these major passages in a rally type
formation," Leishman said, pointing out that the concept of safety in
numbers is a big consideration for rally cruisers.
A key facet of the event will be support for every mile of the trip.
PAE will staff a number of specially selected Nordhavns that will
serve as escort vessels to lead and follow the groups and provide
assistance, including:
--Mechanical and technical support, with mechanics aboard escort
vessels for en-route repairs.
--Divers for underwater repairs.
--Daily roll calls and weather routing information.
--24-hour monitoring of designated VHF and SSB frequencies.
--Physician for medical emergencies.
--Shoreside staff in Bermuda, Horta and Gibraltar to assist owners
with government formalities, provisioning, fuel and shoreside group
activities.
Transoceanic passagemaking is serious business, Leishman said. To
assure a successful event for all, PAE will limit the number of
vessels and require that each meet strict and rigorous
qualifications. But Leishman pointed out that each skipper is
ultimately responsible for his own boat and crew. "If a series of
problems developed, we could have our resources overwhelmed. If we do
get bad weather, for example, each participant is going to be capable
of carrying on without assistance," he said.
Leishman introduced members of the Nordhavn Atlantic Rally organizing
team, including:
--Dan Streech, president of PAE and partner in the company.
--Joe Meglen, secretary-treasurer of PAE and partner in the company.
--Nordhavn designer Jeff Leishman, a partner in the company.
--Jennifer McCauley Stern, who runs PAE's office in Portsmouth, Rhode Island.
--Milt Baker, former owner of Bluewater Books & Charts and a current
Grand Banks 42 owner, who is focusing on rally logistics and in-port
arrangements in Bermuda, the Azores and Gibraltar.
--Mike Martus, a former destroyer captain, retired Navy captain, and
current Nordhavn 50 owner, who will work on the Nordhavn Atlantic
Rally's comprehensive operations manual and will be a key resource
for the at-sea portions of the rally.
--Jim Sink, the first person to circumnavigate the world in a
production powerboat, a Nordhavn 46 named Salvation II.
--Bruce Kessler, who circumnavigated aboard his 70-foot Delta trawler
in the 1990s. Kessler and producer Jo Swerling will accompany the
fleet to create a documentary film of the voyage. "My job is to make
a film that people who have never even thought about going to sea
will want to turn on and stay tuned to," Kessler told reporters.
All entries will be by application only, and the number of entries
will be limited. There will be an entry fee of several thousand
dollars. To request a provisional entry form, contact Jim Leishman at
PAE mailto:jim@nordhavn.com.

CRUISE AND LEARN WITH THE CRUISING CAYWOODS
Recently returned from helping to deliver a 50-foot trawler yacht to
Florida from California, Ann and Tom Caywood now are accepting
registrations for the spring semester of Trawler World Trawler
Training.
"We are very pleased to announce that the Nordlund 53 Tango will be
our training vessel for the spring semester," the Caywoods said. "The
first class is scheduled to start in Sausalito, across the Golden
Gate from San Francisco, on Monday, May 19, and end the following
Saturday at noon."
Additional 5-1/2-day cruises will be scheduled depending on demand.
