Jury members
Dear colleagues,
Happy New Year! Let me first wish you a prosperous year full with
happiness and fulfilment.
As you know, the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes are an important
instrument for UNESCO's efforts to promote literacy and literate environments.
Since their establishment in 1967, UNESCO has awarded the Prizes to over
460 outstanding and innovative literacy programmes undertaken by
governments, NGOs and individuals across the world.
Currently, the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes consist of two
distinct Prizes; namely:
the UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize, established in 1989,
thanks to the generosity of the Government of the Republic of Korea, and
The International Jury of the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes meets
in Paris, France, once a year to assess candidatures submitted by Member
States or by international non-governmental organizations in official
partnership with UNESCO in order to recommend programmes appropriate for the Prizes
to the UNESCO Director-General who makes a decision. As indicated by the
current Statutes (see attached, the two Literacy Prizes Statutes) and the
Prize Strategy (http://unesdoc.unesco.org/images/0022/002202/220226e.pdf),
the International Jury is composed of five members appointed by the UNESCO
Director-General for a two-year periods for a maximum period of six years
considering a gender and regional balance. The Jury members are personalities
with expertise and reputation in the relevant fields and fulfil their
functions based on the principle of non-payment of honoraria.
For the 2015 edition of the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes, four new
members need to be selected (due to the completion of their mandate and
the resignation of one member in 2014), preferably from Africa, Asia and the
Pacific, Latin America. The fifth Jury member from Arab States will remain
in service for this year's edition.
In this context, I am writing to you in order to launch, through your
networks and Field Offices website, the attached call for proposal in order to
select appropriate literacy experts from your region who could potentially
be a good member of the International Jury.
We would appreciate, therefore, if you could disseminate the attached call
for proposal in your region so that the potential candidates for a member
of the International Jury can be invited to express their interest to the
Section for Youth, Literacy and Skills Development in the Division for
Policies and Lifelong Learning Systems of UNESCO) by sending email to
literacyprizes@unesco.org (mailto:literacyprizes@unesco.org)
<mailto:literacyprizes@unesco.org (mailto:literacyprizes@unesco.org) > no later than 28 February
2015. The successful candidates are expected to be contacted by the end of
February 2015 and will be requested to participate in a meeting of the
International Jury which may take place in late spring 2015.
Thank you very much in advance for your contribution.
Best regards,
Borhene Chakroun
