City Adopts Three New Policies
[http://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/WATACOMA/2014/07/331047/351449/greenroads_crop.jpg]Tacoma City Council has signed a resolution – the first of its kind in the nation – directing the City Manager to create a green roads policy and program.http://www.cityoftacoma.org/cms/One.aspx?portalId=169&pageId=9638 The effort will outline how Tacoma’s roads and transportation facilities can become models of environmental, economic and social stewardship through sustainable design, construction and maintenance. The City’s has four existing Greenroads certified projects, which has made Tacoma a national leader in this type of green infrastructure and proven that the approach combines environmental and human health benefits with reduced costs over time. The policy’s aim will be to achieve gold Greenroads certification on large projects, plus one certified example of a residential block, alley, and trail. City staff will also attempt to apply the same practices to new and reconstructed road projects.
The City Council adopted Resolution 38907http://cms.cityoftacoma.org/sustainability/Resolution38907-materialsmanagement.pdf in May 2014, reaffirming the goal of 70% solid waste diversion by 2028 and instructing staff to develop a Sustainable Materials Management Plan.
[http://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/WATACOMA/2014/07/331049/351450/green-event_crop.jpg]As an effort to further the sustainability vision of the community, the City of Tacoma has created a Green Event Programhttp://www.cityoftacoma.org/government/city_departments/City_Managers_Office/office_of_environmental_policy_and_sustainability/green_events/ to help events decrease their impact on the environment. Events that participate in this program take extra care to ensure that their event is more sustainable by incorporating green initiatives like providing bike racks and recycling, using 100% recycled paper, reducing waste, donating excess food, and more. Event planners are also encouraged to submit their own ideas for sustainability initiatives.
