Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsHello,
We are currently in the 1000 Islands and are having a delightful time. Someone said to me recently that they were told "If you are going to Georgia Bay, you don't need to waste your time in the 1000 Islands". Well that is as silly as saying "if you are going up the Champlain Canal, you don't need to see the Erie Canal". For those of you that are not in an apparent rush, then by all means, plan to spend a full month here and maybe a full season on the Erie Canal.
Oops, I almost forgot my question - anybody have any idea for how to quickly de-weed an anchor chain? I've been pulling up 100's of pounds of long grassy weeds every morning and it takes me a full 50 minutes to clean my chain.
Thanks,
Tommy
We encountered the same issue on the Richelieu last year, although it
didn't take us that long to clear the chain using a boat hook and
wash-down pump.
We were told that (at least on the Richelieu) weeds didn't grow in water
more than roughly 15 feet deep because of the reduced sunlight.
I'd suggest:
(1) Anchor in deeper water; or,
(2) Use less scope!
Agree with your assessment of the 1000 Islands. Just like everything
else, everywhere is different and nothing is similar to anything else.
See it all!

Sorry, that should have read Rideau Canal, not the Richelieu. All those
Canadian canals seem to be the same! :-{)

The solution is simple. Stay in marinas! Or tie to a lock wall!

Frank,
If you are so inclined...A day trip up the St Lawrence to Ogdensburg on the
American side will afford you the opportunity to visit the Frederic
Remington Museum. He is from that part of the world and the largest
collection of his work is in that museum. YOu can walk across the park from
the city docks to see the museum. Just FYI

1)Anchor in the deepest water you can find, the deeper the water the less the weeds.
2)Pull up your rode 10 ft at a time for and hour prior to departure, half of the mud and weeds will fall off by themselves.
3)If you cannot see the bottom, your fishfinder will tell you if there are weeds or not, seek a least weedy spot. Jon.
