The following message was provided by BPD:
A protest is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at Downtown Park on Saturday.
We have learned from the Seattle Police that this group has regularly protested in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. While the City of Bellevue welcomes any group or individuals wanting to exercise their 1st amendment rights, unlawful behavior will not be tolerated.
-
This group is mobile with cars, bicycles, and on foot, and they tend to roam through an area.
-
The group is known to set dumpster fires, throw garbage cans, tag buildings, break windows and assault police officers. They may also be very loud as their stated intention is to “wake up” Bellevue.
-
Police Chief Steve Mylett is asking all businesses and homeowners around the downtown area to:
* secure all dumpsters under their control and remove any outside garbage cans or items that may be used to break windows.
* The Chief has been asked whether businesses should board up their windows. Based on current information available to us, the recommendation is businesses should take action they deem appropriate in terms of boarding up.
* If you live in the area and see suspicious activity, we welcome your photographs. Clear pictures of license plates, cars, and potential suspects were very helpful following the May 31st riots. Be sure to note the time of day, location, and any descriptions that might help detectives.
At this point we are unable to predict how many members from this group will arrive in Bellevue on Saturday evening. Bellevue police are monitoring the situation and staffing appropriately for the event and will receive assistance from neighboring agencies.
If possible, please avoid the downtown area during this event.
