A single windlass and anchor on a 48 ft cruiser for cruising is not adequate
as far as I am concerned. A horizontal windlass with twin gypsies and a
working capstan would be preferred, this way two anchors could be rigged on
deck for quick deployment, and the capstan available for the stowed  third
anchor.  I like all chain rhodes so both deck mounted anchors would have 5/16
ht chain of 150-200 ft.  The third stowed anchor which would be used for
kedging, stern anchoring, or ultimate backup etc. would have a rope rode with
chain leader probably 200 ft. of rode with a 20 ft. chain leader. I like the
Spade aluminums for the holding power/weight for the deck anchors, and the
Fortress FX for the stowed anchor. Both chain rhodes should have counters on
them, and the rope rode should be flagged every 20ft. The chain rhodes would
have a robust swivel, and separate rope bridles of each as well. If venturing
offshore I think a sea anchor with dedicated rhode and bridle is a good idea
too. Another good idea is a cantenary weight like the Anchor Buddy to increase
holding power.
