Phil,
Our MT 44's are pretty close in age, vintage 1979. Being the third owner,
much of the original documentation and commissioning papers were never
delivered to me. I don't know which yard produced Micha.
How do you identify which of the eight yards manufactured the boat? Is
there any clue in the hull ID number? You obviously learned Curmudgeon's
pedigree but I'd like to know if you, or anyone on TWL, can help me find
out who produced Micha.
In terms of the quality of labor and materials used, can you state and
share with TWL, what yards were "good" and which yards were "bad"?
There is no secret, especially in boats, that you get what you pay for.
And there is truth in these statements made by others. Marine Traders
have been called the Yugos of trawlers. Marine Traders are cheap to buy,
but dear to maintain.
Like other comments on this thread, I got the most boat for the money
that I could buy a year ago, after shopping for trawlers for nearly 2.5
years. It needed a lot of work and money to bring it up to the condition
that was acceptable for my use. I carefully estimated all of the
projects, work and materials that were going to be required, and of
course, it is taking 3X as long and costing 5X over what was budgeted,
but I am still pleased with the outcome. Like another Marine Trader owner
stated, I wouldn't trade even with any other trawler.
thanks

(SNIP) How do you identify which of the eight yards manufactured the
boat?
I don't know of any way to do this. The only number on my boat is on
the lower right side of the Transom. Here's the code: Hull Number
ETY445420679-TC (Triple cabin) Eagle Trawler Yacht, 44', #524, 6/79
build
You might try Don Miller ("the man") at Marine Trading International in
Tom's River NJ. Those are the guys I talked to about who the best yard
was to replace fuel tanks...
