Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes

The stretch between Baton Rouge and New Orleans is known as "cancer alley." The Coast guard buoy tender doesn't even like that part of the river.

We took the Atchfalaya River cut off from the Mississippi last spring. It has a couple of advantages if you are heading west on the ICW, it is 115 miles from the Old River Lock to Morgan City and is a fairly straight line, easily done in one day with the current in a boat that we run at 9 MPH. Another advantage is that you don't have to wait at the Harvey Locks for hours to get back westbound. I don't know about the "cancer" statement, we found most of the "tribal knowledge" of the lower Mississippi is unfounded, there are plenty of anchorages (see Active Captain), that fuel stops are adequate and the tow traffic is not any different than the upper Mississippi or the Ohio. We talked the CG tenders in Memphis and Greenville as we worked our way down the river, asking about the lower river and no one mentioned anything about cancer. If I wanted a quick route to the ICW east bound, I would take the Lower Mississippi, of course you will have to deal with Industrial Lock going east and that can cause one to gnash your teeth, but the most I have ever been held is 6 hours and in the scheme of things that is not a big deal.
Been a busy season, we are Harbor Host at Alton and had 24 loopers for dinner Tuesday and every day this week we had multiple couple to show the sights and eat at Mac"s.
