COACHES AND COMPETITORS!...
Two of our fantastic coaches put the pedal to the (hot) metal this weekend
and competed in events... So how did they do?
Our club running coach, Karen Dunn, who we last saw competing in the
Women's Olympic Marathon Trials in Atlanta just pre-COVID-19, is
participating in a multi-week running event called "Beat the Heat - Trials
of Miles" in which only the top participants each week make it to the next
round. This week's event was a 2 mile track run (and the next three weeks
include distances of 1 mile, 5k, and 2k). Karen had a great run that put
her through to the next round! Go Karen! Also, in case you haven't seen
it, this preview show about the event includes a nice mention of Karen
about 12 minutes in...

In addition to that I had the pleasure to catch Don Schlichtmann racing
around Spring Ford Senior High School for a 3rd consecutive weekend in the
"Pickle Juice Race Series", which is a 15 mile/20 lap "crit" bike race
("crit" is short for "criterium", a high speed intense bike race that
includes multiple laps around a closed circuit). In the first two races
Don impressively placed 3rd, then 1st... Unfortunately this week, Don had a
mid-race wreck due to a bike crashing right in front of him on one of the
tight turns... Fortunately both Don and the other rider were okay (whew!),
somehow besides not being injured, Don even managed to protect his bike
🙂... Then Don did what is generally not possible in these events... He
managed to work his way back to the rear of the lead pack and by the final
2-3 laps he was amazingly back in contention... Ultimately he managed to
place 3rd for a 3rd straight podium finish! Below are a few photos
(including a couple of the crash caught on another rider's GoPro) and a
couple of videos that include the race finish.
Congrats to Karen and Don!
