Visitors:
Thank you Stan and John for their visit, as well as a lovely young family
who visited to collect data on the types of birds we see on the marsh.
There are a few up and coming researchers in that group! Thank you to all
for your visit!
Weather:
Another really nice day on the tower, really enjoying these days before it
eventually gets cold!
Morning winds came from the North, but shifted and blew more from the East
and South-East for the rest of the day. Not much of a cloud cover, giving
the raptors the opportunity to soar very high.
Raptor Observations:
It was a slow day on the tower. During the first couple of hours, I only
counted a few Sharp-shinned Hawks (9) and Northern Harriers (6).
Eventually, the Turkey Vultures started to fly and I ended the day with a
total of 1,114 Turkey Vultures. Amongst them were a handful of Red-tailed
Hawks (15), and one Red-shouldered Hawk.
Non-raptor Observations:
Slow day for the non-raptor species as well. I only counted 8,290 Blue
Jays, and fewer of our regular species. A small group of songbirds circled
the tower in the morning, including Blue-headed and Red-eyed Vireos,
Yellow-rumped Warblers, a Northern Parula, and Ruby-crowned Kinlgets. The
highlight on the day was an Eastern Towhee at the base of the tower.
Blue Jays: 8,290
Starling: 580
Cedar Waxwing: 59
American Goldfinch: 108
Red-winged Blackbird: 75
White-throated Sparrow: 5
American Coot: 139
Bonaparte's Gull: 120

Predictions:
Tomorrow we are expecting another very pleasant and warm day on the tower,
however with winds coming from the South-East all day. Also, it looks like
the rain will hold off until the evening, which is always a bonus!
We hope for more Turkey Vultures and Red-tailed and Red-shouldered Hawks.
