I don't know Bruce Kessler but he was a TV producer and I believe he
circumnavigated in a Delta built trawler named Zopilote, which was lost in
Alaska.  He then built and now cruises Spirit of Zopilote, built by Northern
Marine.  I think this second boat was featured in PassageMaker a couple of
years ago.

He filmed the Nordhavn rally.  If no one here has contact information for
him, I imagine you could get in touch with him through their marketing
department in Dana Point.

Last summer Georgs asked if anyone was interested in

doing a brief article on "Sea Tracks of the Speejacks" or A.
Y. Gowen, the first power boat to circumnavigate in 1923.
Though I did not write the article it sparked an interest in
me and I started looking for the book. Well my librarian wife
and I found a number of them. One published in 1923 loaned to
us by an out of town library and one published in 1926 that I bought.
I noted that the 1926 publication had a chapter in the
beginning written by Jean Gowen the wife of A. Y. Gowen. It
seems that at the start she was going to write the book but
by the time they got to Australia they had decided to hire
someone to write it and they did in the person of a Mr. Dale
Collins which is listed as the author. In the
1926 version Mrs. Gowen fills in the space between the
beginning of the journey and Australia.
Anyway getting back to the purpose of this e-mail,
there was also a fellow on board that documented the whole
trip on film, 93,000 feet of it to be exact. This summer when
I was trying to find out if that film was available I
stumbled across an American Film Institute web site that
actually listed the film. I cannot find it now though. I was
wondering if anyone on this list knows Bruce Kessler. He was
a television producer I believe and possibly could find the
film or help me find it. Boy, I sure would like to see it.

Zopilote struck a fly speck on an electronic chartplotting system
that hid a pinnacle rock located in the northern edge of Dixon
Entrance. The rock rises out of deep water and is only a few feet
across.  Paul West is a diver who built a 60'? sailboat at Ketchikan
Alaska, painted a bright red and presently moored in Charleston
Oregon. He tells me that he has dived on the pinnacle and there are
still pieces of Z lying about. You may recall that a former client of
mine's boat did something similar to Oregon Rock located in Nanaimo
BC harbor this past summer. The results were similar.

It does not pay to pass close to any obstacles in BC or AK unless you
know precisely where you are and what is around. This is not likely
unless you live there. Even steel boats can get into serious trouble
due to the large tides in the area.

Just for the record, Bruce Kessler was no longer the owner of Zopilote when
it struck the rock. The Sirit of Zopilote is a beautiful boat. We end up
seeing her and Bruce along the way around Miami and Solomons Island.
