Jim BB is an expensive snake oil IMHO so glad your looking for an alternative. Muriadic acid read that label It is dangerous stuff and I will not have it onboard. I use CLR (Calcium lime reducer) available in big box store. What makes you think you have barnacles in your A/C units ?
Have you blown out the water lines to units with a hose on dock pressure?

Bob,
I disagree with the snake oil description. My Cummins QSM11 ran from VA to Key West and was about 172-174’ cruising at 18-19 knots. I had a local engine repair service change oil, filters on the engine and asked if he could assess whether or not I needed heat exchanger and after-cooler service. He removed the stainless tube between the two and saw that the tubes were clear and no evidence of corrosion. I asked him to clean with Barnacle Buster regardless. On the way home, the engine ran the same speed and the engine temp was 162-164’. It did something!
There are homemade solutions that some folks recommend and there are some commercial solutions that could cost less. However, BB worked.
I also take advice of someone on this forum (and other forums) of flushing the engine with freshwater whenever it sits for more than 1 week. Just run the engine on idle for 10 minutes with the thru hull closed, strainer basket lid open, and fresh hose in stainer basket. At idle, the hose keeps up with the water pump demand.
