Habitat Restoration Continues Along South Prairie Creek!
What: Planting the understory along South Prairie Creek where invasive knotweed has been removed.
When: Saturday, September 29, 2012
Time: 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
Where: The "Bee Spit" Property, 5 minutes from Orting. RSVP for exact location.
Why: South Prairie Creek is considered the premiere salmon stream in the Puyallup River watershed, and has the attention of many local and state agencies concerned about preserving and improving critical habitat for salmon. For the past several years, one major focus of these efforts has been to eradicate the invasive non-native Japanese knotweed from the banks of the stream. With the monoculture stands of knotweed now gone, this project will plant 225 trees and shrubs to begin the process of establishing a diverse riparian habitat for the benefit of fish, birds, and other wildlife and concludes the initial phase of replanting this 20-acre parcel. Volunteers may also be asked to assist with light maintenance of the previous planting efforts if time allows.
