Many/most US brands, like Grunert, Adler Barbour, etc, use a European
compressor brand (just can't for the life of me recall the name), so "brand name"
is not so important.
(Anybody know the name???)
It's the one that had the defect that affected many brands in the '90s
causing premature compressor failure (long since corrected.). I know because My
Adler Barbour used one and it was replaced by the factory because the technician
knew enough to get me one for free.
Here is what is "key"
(1) capacity of new compressor should match that of the old,
(2) connection fittings should be compatible,
(3) refrigerant type is critical....most of different vintages cannot be
mixed.
Likely your "old refrigerant" is ozone unfriendly and can be replaced only
from that recovered by a technician removing old systems. (It's likely no
longer manufactured)
Estimate perhaps $200 for replacement of the OLD refrigerant!!!. FAR BETTER
and cheaper to have a technician flush your old refrigerant from the existing
evaporator system unit (ice cube tray or whatever). New refrigerant might be
$20 (not inlcuding labor). Flushing takes only a few minutes. Newest refrigerant
is only perhaps 5% less efficient than the old unfriendly type, so is a good
choice.
I bought a used Adler Barbour System on E-bay a few years ago. If you opt to
purchase a used system,do NOT count on being able to reuse the
refrigerant...it's most often lost after disassembly, removal and storage. And the
replacement compressor would have to be flushed and refilled as does your existing
evaporator system
