We are in Montreal having cruised here from the Chesapeake Bay via the Erie/Oswego Canals.  We had planned on returning to the Chesapeake Bay mid-September via Lake Champlain but we lost 3 weeks due to a damaged shaft, prop, strut etc. from a submerged log.  So we are now thinking of continuing up the St. Lawrence to Quebec and possibly beyond (Saguenay?) leaving the boat up here for the winter.  We'd be interested in hearing from anyone who's done that, including where you wintered your boat.  Thanks!

Steve

There are many marinas and places where you can leave your boat along the
St-Lawrence River. But the more you go North (Tadoussac), the worse is
winter, including possible ice on deck and heavy snow. Consider also a
longer time to wait in spring 2015 to have access to your boat and put it
back in the water.

You also have to figure a way to come back to Quebec City or Montreal by
bus.

That said, the Saguenay river and Tadoussac are one of the most beautiful
cruise you can think of, comparable to the fjords in Norway.

Personnally, I would consider cruising the St-Lawrence and Saguenay in
September, but would bring back the boat closer to Quebec City early October
for the winter. (Most marinas close on Oct 15th). It's a 15-20 hours cruise
from Saguenay to Quebec City (consider tide and currents).

But at this time of the year, my first choice would be to take the Ottawa
river route, do the Rideau Canal and enjoy the beauty of the Rideau System
and peaceful life. Weather will be much more enjoyable. Ottawa and Rideau
Canal are a must.

Just to give you an idea, the water temp actually in Tadoussac is 48F, and
in Big Rideau Lake (summit of the Rideau system), it is 72F.

If you decide to keep your boat in Montreal or Kingston for the winter, let
me know and I can help to provide suggestions, and eventually keep an eye on
the boat once or twice during the winter.

A good compromise between Quebec City and further downstream would be
Trois-Rivieres Marina.  We did not store there over winter, but did stay on
two occasions.  Nice town, good transportation to either Montreal or Quebec.
