I sent an E mail asking if they would consider building a boat, with the
pilothouse offset to one side, so that there was a walk way forward on the
other side--as some trawlers have the saloon offset. We suggested a slighly
longer pilothouse, containing a dinette, galley, hanging locker and head,
plus a raised deck foreward, with passage into the hulls on both sides. A
queen size berth over the wing deck, which one could access from either
side, would fulfill our objectives. A boat this size should be able to
carry the fuel for 300 miles. The narrow side decks are a definate
disadvantage on the Tom Cat 255. I had difficulty getting foreward on a Tom
Cat 24 to undo the bow lines or anchor. I will get back to the list when
I get an answer if custom built boats are available.
The boats built for Elfin Cove are definately fishing boats, and serve
admirably in Alaska with shelter when running and warmth, plus good fishing
accessability similar to a center console. We saw them when we were
cruising Alaska, but didn't give them much thought, since we were not
interested in cats at that time.
I wasn't sure if the boat was going to be called the "chilk 30", as
mentioned in the C Dory owners group, or the "Chilkat 30" as on the web
site. Georgs is correct in using the "Chilkat" name.
Incidently the World Cat 32 has the queen berth in the center, and it is
great layout. Unfortunately the beam 10' 6", which is beyond the simple
wide load permit
