Hello Birders,
Alex your so right on the directions and agree its a good place for blackbirds from past times. It is a interesting place. Edgewood Park
remember this is the location that hosted the imature Red-Headed Woodpecler earlier.

Hey all,
For anyone unfamiliar with the spot Nick's talking about, it's right across
the street from West River Memorial Park (I believe it's technically park of
Edgewood Park) on Rt. 34 (Derby Ave) in between Rt. 10 (Ella T. Grasso Blvd)
and Yale Ave. I remember watching blackbirds land there as a kid - only now
as a birder does it strike me as a good spot for 'em! Thanks, Nick!

A few evenings ago I noticed a nice-sized blackbird roost at the
intersection of Routes 34 & 10 in New Haven. I believe this is just
south of Edgewood Park (I've never birded there so I'm not sure). I
was driving by and had no time to stop, but while sitting at a red
light I estimated about 5,000 birds swarming about and covering the
trees adjacent to the marsh with the Osprey platform in it (NW of the
intersection). There were some European Starling involved but they
appeared to be in the minority. Mainly Common Grackles and Red-winged
Blackbirds.
Anyway, sounds like a promising spot to find something like a
Yellow-headed Blackbird. It's been a while since we've had a
chase-able one of those!

Hi Mardi - Did you see the RHWP? Because I mentioned in a previous post
(perhaps not as many people had joined CTBirds yet) that I'm interested in
where exactly in Edgewood Park that was seen... if anyone has info, I'd love
to hear.
Thanks,

Everyone describes it as near or at the dog walking area. Below are
directions that appeared on the daily report for December 22. I have
not been there and do not know the area, just repeating what was said
at the time. In this link you should have no trouble seeing the
tennis courts.

RH Woodpecker Directions: Park at the tennis courts at the end of
Edgewood Park adjacent to Whalley Ave. The parking lot is accessible
from West Rock Ave, which is the traffic signal on Whalley Ave.
between the intersections of Fitch St and Central Ave with Whalley
Ave. Nearby locate and cross the small footbridge to a paved road on
the east side of the river. Follow the paved road past the Coogan
Pavilion on your right to the end of a fenced off area adjacent to the
pavilion. Just beyond the end of the fenced area to your right there
is a grove of trees by a smaller fenced off dog-walking area. The
bird was seen on both occasions flying amongst the trees in and around
the dog-walking area.
