Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsI am looking at a boat which would require a semi to transport. Anybody on the list have any recommendations or suggestions for such a service in the upper Midwest.

Hi,
Your timing is so great. I too was looking for the freight cost
number. David, thank you for asking. And everyone, thanks for the
replies with names. I am looking at a similar move.
Received the $4 per mile figure for a DownEaster - 11000 pounds. If
the beam is over the basic permit limit (beam and weight) there will
be additional costs. My 15 foot beam trawler "required" special
permits to "truck," so she got moved on her bottom. Side benefit,
got to see more of the backyards and shore line. Most sailboats and
smaller power boats fall in the basic "wide load" range.
Because the lateness of the Great Lakes season, I will leave the boat
on the coast until spring, working my way north. This will give me
time to do a "proper shake down," in reasonable good water and WX,
and get to know the boat.
Once I get on the Chesapeake, the transfer to a low boy will be
manageable. Will have to contend with those states which want "us"
out of their water after so many months & days, but..... Norfolk to
Annapolis, or reverse, can be a very nice run even on New Year's
Eve. Was one of the best runs South.
Thanks everyone from a Lower Great Lakes Half Looper GL

'Lo All,
....but..... Norfolk to Annapolis, or reverse, can be a very nice
run even on New Year's Eve.
I think the operative words are "....can be....".
We did something like this years ago, when we left a marina on the
Cohansey River at Grenwich, NJ on about 8 December. We were bringing
our old sailboat to Panama City, FL. The late departure was mandated
by GE, in order to get the severance package I wanted; otherwise, I
would have left at least in November. We had ice in the mornings in
our freshwater anchorages until somewhere south of Virginia. Fairly
thin ice (1/8" to 3/8" or so) to be sure, but fiberglass reportedly
does not like to be run through ice. Since I did not want to damage
the bow, I let the "big" anchor hang off the bow, dragging in the
water to break up the ice while I slowly reentered the ICW (which was
essentially ice-free).
Had freezing rain one night, at Harbor Village Marina, Topsail Inlet,
north of Wrightsville, SC. In the morning, there was over 1/2" of ice
all over the boat - rigging, lines, decks, mast, spreaders -
everything. As it warmed up, there was a real danger from the ice
falling off of the spreaders, stays, genoa and mast.
I would never again intentionally plan on being in a freshwater
anchorage in Virginia in late December.
YMMV
Take care and be safe.
