I don't think that John Gill's description is totally correct. When you come
out of Lock 45 at Port Severn, the lateral buoyage does change from
"downstream" (red to port) to "upstream" (red to starboard). That is because
the Small Craft Channel, going northbound, has been arbitrarily designated
as "upstream". If, however, you leave the main Small Craft Channel (which is
a solid red line on the chart and goes through Potato Island Channel), then
you are considered to be outbound to seaward and the buoyage switches again
to red to port. This sort of switch game occurs several times as you work
your way north and it is important to study the chart carefully. There is
logic to it, but it needs attention by the skipper.
