Visitors:
We thank all today's observers for their outstanding efforts and those
interested in the ongoing Hawk Count. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, access
to the top level of Hawk Tower is limited to hawk counters and qualified
observers only. The 2nd and lower levels are open to the public practising
COVID-19 safe precautions (social distancing). Thank you for your
understanding and involvement.
Weather:
Partly cloudy skies were prevalent today with good visbility and good
lighting. Moderate to strong winds tarted north-easterly in the morning,
shifting to easterly mid day and then back to north-easterly by the
afternoon. Temperatures started at 12 C but elevated to a high of 17 C.
Raptor Observations:
Nice day for raptor migration thanks in part to the winds pushing all
raptors over the tower. Good day for Turkey Vultures with 1284 seen.
Sharpies however were surprisingly low with only 20 seen. A very good day
for buteos starting early in the morning with a total of 64 Red Shoulders
and 263 Red Tails, among these tails was a Dark Morph Red Tail. A single
Broad Wing made an appearance. Two Golden Eagles made surprised us today
with one appearing at 9:15 am and 2:41 pm EST. A great sighting today was a
Black Vulture at 2:10 pm!!
Non-raptor Observations:
Diverse marsh count continues with growing Black Ducks, American Coot, Ring
Necked Duck and Northern Shovelers. American Crow Migration continues with
5760 seen. An amazing spot by Kory Renaud was a Common Raven traveling east
in contrast to the migrating Crows. Monarchs were not present today.
Predictions:
Temperatures tomorrow are expected to be stable around 12 degrees C. Wind
is also expected to a stable easterly. However, consistent rainfall is
expected throughout the day which will likely hamper raptor movements as
similar to the Monday rainfall of this week.
