Spaceworks Tacoma invites artists to submit proposals for creative uses for vacant space and empty storefronts

Spaceworks Tacoma, a joint initiative of the City of Tacoma, Shunpike and the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber of Commerce, will launch in June. The goal of the program is to transform vacant spaces and empty storefronts in downtown Tacoma with a diverse range of art installations and performances, artist residencies, creative enterprise and pop-up events.

Opportunities are available for artists, fledgling creative entrepreneurs, organizations and community groups. Interested parties must have an artistic idea and a solid plan for making temporary use of no- and low-cost space, and be interested in participating in the revitalization of downtown.
"Spaceworks Tacoma was designed with multiple pathways to participation to allow as much flexibility and innovation as possible," explains Amy McBride, Arts Administrator for the City of Tacoma. "Quality, and the ability to make good on proposals, is paramount. But I, and the other program sponsors, want to embolden artists and other interested participants to push the boundaries of creativity."

Spaceworks Tacoma offers four tracks for participation:

  • Artscapes is a temporary public art program with opportunities for visual and performance-based works in Tollefson Plaza, and installations in interior window storefronts.

  • The artist residency program offers the chance to pursue projects, ranging from one to six months in duration, in any discipline.

  • Creative enterprise provides designers, crafters, consultants and other fledgling entrepreneurs with the chance to test new products and services in a physical space.

  • Pop-up events might include poetry slams, ad-lib opera or a record release party. Thinking outside the box is encouraged.

The initiative is ongoing and applications are rolling. The deadline for the June launch is May 7, 2010. For a program overview, or to submit a proposal online, visit SpaceWorksTacoma.comhttp://www.spaceworkstacoma.com/.

An informational overview and community workshop is scheduled for April 28, from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at Suite 133, 703 Pacific Ave. RSVP to Lindsey@Shunpike.org.

Colliers International is supporting the launch of the pilot program in June 2010 with multiple spaces in two commercial properties.
