Chart 18007 San Francisco to Cape Flattery.
Note that at 41-28 N and 124-54 W there is a 331 fathom (2000 feet)
shallow area and that just below and east of there the water is much
deeper. Any long period wave arriving from the far Pacific would be
parallel to the coast along the entire coast, at this point. Such a wave
would be twisted around and funneled towards Crescent City.
There is no similar structure along the US West Coast and it may account
for why CC gets hit. The underlying assumption is that the waves that
have caused damage at CC were of such a length that they would be
focused by such water depths as exist in this area. The wave length
involved can't be much more than 30-50 miles at these water depths, I
would estimate.
I don't think this proves the case, but the possibility is intriguing.
