View all threadsI’ve attached the text and a section-by-section summary of the GOP FY18 Continuing Resolution (CR). Congress must pass a CR by Friday in order to avoid at least a partial government shutdown.
From what I understand, House Republicans are supposed to be meeting this morning to figure out next steps. Last night House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows (R., N.C.) told the press that there was not enough support to pass this CR with Republican votes only.
But if they can get it through the House, then we’ll have to see if they can get the nine votes in the Senate they need to avoid a filibuster. The Democrats have said that they won’t vote for another CR unless DACA legislation is attached. But note that this CR includes a six-year funding extension for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), so it puts Democrats in a tough position — if they filibuster the CR, they risk being blamed for shutting down the government while also turning down the opportunity to extend healthcare coverage for kids…
Maybe they are close enough to a DACA deal behind the scenes that they can vote for the CR and say with a straight face that a handshake deal is in place for DACA? I don't know — just speculating.
