Hi everyone --

I've been asked to share this information with our section.  Gary's work has been of great interest to CITASA members for quite some time.  He is one of the guest panelists on our jointly sponsored "Privacy in the Digital Age" sessions in Vegas, too.

Come one, come all for this happy occasion!

Best,
Chris

Subject: Invitation to Attend Lifetime Achievement Award Ceremony for Gary T. Marx

Dear Colleagues:

At the annual meeting of the Society for the Study of Social Problems in Las Vegas, Professor Gary T. Marx will be honored with a life time achievement award. The session honoring Gary will be August 19, 2:30-4:10 PM in the Cooper Room at Harrah’s Hotel.  Six presenters from various stages of his career will offer remark about Gary’s contribution.  Many others will be in attendance, and I write to invite any interested scholars, colleagues, and students to attend.

In a distinctive voice for almost 5 decades, Gary has contributed to our understanding of race relations, collective behavior and social movements, law and society and surveillance studies. His writing has appeared in academic and popular outlets across disciplines and cultures and has been widely recognized with awards, fellowships, and a great many reprints and translations. He has taught at 22 schools in the U.S., Europe and Asia; written 19 co-authored articles (almost all with his students); written 12 introductions to colleagues’ books and served on an array of editorial and review boards, panels, committees and commissions. Much of his work in recent decades is at www.garymarx.net.

It would be great if you can join us in Las Vegas. If you are able to attend, I am sure that Gary would appreciate it.  In addition, regardless of whether or not you are able to attend, perhaps you would like to write a few words to Gary recalling your contact with him. Please feel welcome to contact Gary directly; he knows about the award, so you would not be ruining any surprise.  Alternately, if you prefer, you would be welcome to forward your remarks to me, as I will be compiling them to present to Gary in one packet.

I hope I will see you at the session, however even if you cannot attend, I trust you will be there in spirit.  For now, I hope you are enjoying the summer months (if you’re in the northern hemisphere).

With best regards,
Glenn Muschert
