ReliquaryWork by Nicholas NylandJuly 19th - August 12thOpening Reception:
Thursday, July 19th from 6-9PM

Statement:
My work occupies the margins where sculpture, painting, design and craft
overlap. This recent work is a dialogue among forms that are translated
into painting and vice-versa. I’m particularly interested in bringing
antique motifs and elements of craft or applied art practices (such as
early American decorative arts or stained glass design) into a fine art
context. In recent years, ceramics has become important to my practice
because it offers a medium that can express immediacy of touch while also
connecting to a long historical tradition. The inherent tension between a
form and its surface design means that the work can operate as a sculpture
on one hand and a painting on the other.
