Dear all: please post if possible, with apologies in advance if your
organization does not post calls or if there is a fee involved (CoCA is
100% volunteer-powered). This is a unique outdoor land-art exhibit in a
Seattle urban forest viewed by 100,000 during the summer months and offers
artists stipends of $300-$500 (funded by Carkeek Park Advisory Council,
4culture, Seattle Arts & Cultural Affairs), catalog publication, and 1-yr
membership in CoCA. A pdf of the call is attached.
Sincerely,
David

CALL for ART
The Center on Contemporary Art (CoCA) is proud to partner again with the
Carkeek Park Advisory Council and Seattle Parks and Recreation to bring the
fourth exhibition of temporary, outdoor artwork to one of Seattle’s premier
urban forests from June 23, 2012 - October 31, 2012.
Spread throughout Carkeek Park’s 200-plus acres in a series of clusters
linked by trails, Heaven and Earth affords a prime opportunity to explore
a broad range of contemporary interpretations of art and nature, including
landscape design, experimental geography, garbology, biomimicry, and other
interdisciplinary perspectives.
CoCA is currently accepting proposals for a wide variety of media
(landscape architecture, sculptural work, performance, multi-media, new
media) for placement in a series of pre-selected sites viewable online (
http://www.cocaseattle.org/carkeekphotos.htm). Applicants may also propose
additional sites. The Call is open to all artists, whether established or
emerging and local, regional, national, or international. Additional
stipends for artists to travel to Seattle may be available pending further
funding. Working in conjunction with its partners, CoCA will select up to
15 artists from the pool of applicants and offer a small stipend of $300 -
$500 depending on site selection and proposals. CoCA will also publish a
catalog of the exhibition and offer participating artists a 1-year
membership in CoCA.
All work should eventually leave "no trace" following removal. Interactive
artworks featuring wind / solar elements are encouraged, as are proposals
that include ephemeral materials (leaves, seeds, plants, bark, soil, sod,
branches, straw bales, erosion control fabric, etc.). For 2012, the exhibit
is also hoping to attract artworks that display significant change over the
four-month display period, such as the effects of weathering and erosion,
or of accretion and addition involving repeated site visits (i.e.
performance). Grant funding from 4Culture’s Site Specific Program in 2012
will be partly dedicated to a cluster of artwork in Piper’s Creek Orchard,
a historic apple grove in the heart of the park.
Carkeek Park visitorship during the display period is estimated at 100,000.
Educational outreach to Seattle Public Schools is sponsored by a grant from
the Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs. With installation sites in
both open and secluded settings, the exhibit is unsecured and “hands-on”
for many members of the public, who explore the artworks using a map from
the website, at a local kiosk, or with a QR code reader.
Deadline is midnight Sunday, May 6, 2012. CoCA offers a sliding-scale
application fee: pay what you can from $0 to $10 (suggested) to $20 and up.
Apply at: http://www.cocaseattle.org/submission.php (please see details
below).
Heaven and Earth is one of the region's only venues for site-specific
artwork in an urban forest setting where part of the exhibit includes a
walking tour of an hour or more. The work will be archived on the Heaven
and Earth website (www.heavenandearthexhibition.org), and the exhibition
will also include production of a catalog, a sculpture trail map, and
(pending funding) postcards, and print ads. Previous press coverage has
included pieces by KOMO TV, *Seattle Times, Tacoma News Tribune, Seattle
Weekly, City Arts, REI Blog, Art and Science Blog, *and *7,000 Articulations
CoCA will ask selected artists to attend an orientation session in the park
on or about Saturday, June 2, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. There will be a reception
for the artists on Saturday, June 23, from 2 - 5 p.m. at the Environmental
Learning Center in Carkeek Park, 950 NW Carkeek Park Rd. Entry and parking
are free.
SUBMISSION DETAILS
Please send submissions to http://www.cocaseattle.org/submission.php. Be
sure to select “Heaven and Earth 4” when prompted for what exhibit you are
submitting for.
PROPOSAL
The system will give you a field with up to 500 words to enter your
proposal(s). To review sample areas and sites, artists should first browse
the interactive map of the park at www.cocaseattle.org/carkeekphotos.htm.
Cluster #2 B will be expanded this year to accommodate up to four artworks
that incorporate change; additional funding for these projects is provided
by 4Culture.
Artists can also propose additional sites, keeping in mind that
installations should occur in "human-use" areas where buildings, fields,
fence-lines, and other "built features" are in evidence. It is also
advisable to place artworks relatively near the access road for easy
maintenance checks. Within such areas, patches of invasive vegetation (ivy,
blackberry, etc.) offer particularly welcome raw material; otherwise,
artworks should avoid permanent impacts to living trees and plants.
STATEMENT
The system will prompt you to upload a 300 word statement specific to the
themes of the show.
BIOGRAPHY
Please submit a 300 word biography (no resumes please). These texts will
accompany your images in the catalog.
IMAGES
The system will prompt you to upload a maximum of six images. Provide up to
six digital images of generally similar previous work, jpg file format,
maximum dimension of 800 pixels in either direction. Include a description
of the images (artwork title, dimensions, medium, and year of creation).
• If a proposed piece already exists, submit a digital image of it as one
your six images.
• If a piece has not been made yet, provide a digital image of a sketch or
maquette of the piece you intend to install as one your six images, and
describe it in writing in the PROPOSAL section of your submission.
FEE
We do not want to discourage participation by setting a fixed fee for
submission, so donate what you feel is appropriate using the PayPal button
to the left, or send your check payable to CoCA, Heaven & Earth, 6413
Seaview Ave. NW, Seattle, WA 98107. Be sure to indicate Carkeek Park
Sculpture Exhibition on your check. The amount of your donation has no
bearing on your potential for selection.
Entry deadline is May 6, 2012. Proposals are judged by a panel of six, with
representatives from CoCA, the local arts community, Carkeek Park Advisory
Council, and Seattle Parks and Recreation. In addition to the criteria for
the exhibit, proposals are also evaluated for site specific response to
Carkeek Park
(see http://www.seattle.gov/parks/parkspaces/carkeekpark/history.htm) and
feasibility. The panel is thus composed of artists, curators, arts
administrators, educators, engineers, and citizens.
CoCA will notify 15 finalists by May 19. Install dates in the park are June
19-22. De-install occurs during the first week in November.
Please call 206-851-9641 (David Francis, Curator) for more information.
CoCA will ask participating artists to sign a W-9 to receive the stipend,
and a liability waiver (“Artist's Loan Agreement”) recognizing the inherent
risk of exhibiting unsecured art in a public setting and seeking permission
to use any images for promotional purposes.
