Total observation time: 6 hours
Official Counter: Chris Burris
Observers: Matt Oswald
Visitors:
Thanks to Chris B and Matt O for doing today's count which was challenging
given the mostly blue skies early on and the birds going high.
Weather:
Temps ranged from 8C-16C. Winds were rather steady and moderate â from
10-20 km/h â throughout the count period, beginning NW and ending up due
W on the ground while still showing a northerly component up higher. Clouds
built to about 60% coverage throughout the day.
Raptor Observations:
A total of 565 birds, with over 90 percent NOT Turkey Vultures, so not a
bad day. Sharp-shinned Hawks topped off at over 400 and were moving before
the sun crested the horizon. There was a fair sampling of other species,
including a single Osprey and a few Red-shoulders. The birds got
unexpectedly (and ridiculously) high as the day progressed and the sky
eventually emptied around 1pm, with only 9 birds recorded in the final 30
minutes of observation thereafter.
Non-raptor Observations:
Non-raptors included: Canada Goose, Herring Gull, American Crow, Great
Bluer Heron, Mourning Dove, Blue Jay, American Goldfinch, Northern Flicker,
European Starling, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Red-bellied Woodpecker,
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Pileated Woodpecker, Black-capped Chickadee,
White-throated Sparrow, Carolina Wren, Blue-headed Vireo, Ruby-crowned
Kinglet, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Purple Finch, Pine Siskin, American Robin,
Northern Flicker, Hairy Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, Hermit Thrush,
Eastern Bluebird, Golden-crowned Kinglet, and Brown Creeper.
