Visitors:
We thank today's observers for their efforts and those interested in the
ongoing Hawk Count. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, access to the top level
of Hawk Tower is limited to hawk counters and qualified observers only. The
2nd and lower levels are open to the public practising COVID-19 safe
precautions (social distancing). Thank you for your understanding and
involvement.
Weather:
A clear day with only slight cloud cover and the wind remaining from the
south west light to moderate all day. The temperature started at 8c and
rose to a seasonally warm 15c. A slight haze crept in over the lake in the
afternoon.
Raptor Observations:
Generally numbers have diminished over the last few days, with Turkey
Vultures (255) again the most today. Red-tailed Hawks numbered only 34 and
all other species failed to reach double digits. Highlights were another 3
Golden Eagles, at a distance to the north, a Merlin who decided to perch in
a tree close to the tower for a while and a nice gray Ghost Northern
Harrier late in the day.
Non-raptor Observations:
Starlings (6540) continue to head west in large flocks, but no American
Crows today. Blackbird numbers generally are way down, but Rusty Blackbirds
(235) continue to call around the tower in good numbers. Good numbers of
Cedar Waxwings (280) passed by, with smaller numbers of Horned Larks (67)
and American Goldfinches (84). 2 Purple Finches and a single Pine Siskin
were seen and heard. Duck numbers are stable, again with the exception of
Ring-necked Ducks
(3710) whose numbers have exploded. The list is at
https://ebird.org/checklist/S97273378
Predictions:
Tomorrow's weather is much the same as the last two days; clear skies with
wind from the south west. Let's hope the decline in numbers is reversed and
we see a few more buteos.
