We plan to embark in July on a two month "Little Loop" cruise (Hudson River, Erie Canal, Rideau, etc.). First really extended cruise for us. What have you experienced loopers found to be the best way to receive mail while cruising? Thanks.

Steve,
We do all our financial stuff online, so there isn’t a lot of important mail. The post office saves it, a friend looks thru it and calls if anything does look important. We haven’t had any problems.

We use a UPS mailbox service and just let them know where to send mail next. We just forward our mail there to UPS box or get it as new address.

We embark on a long cruise of over six months duration about every two
years, shorter cruises of 2-3 months in the intervening years. We've had
good luck using UPS stores for whatever USPS mail remains after
switching everything possible over to automatic payments or electronic
billing. FedEx and UPS will also deliver packages to the UPS store
using the address the store will give you.

You can have the USPS temporarily forward mail for up to six months and
get an extension if you want. Can be done online.

Rent a UPS store mailbox for the number of months you need; cancel when
you return and let the post office (USPS) know to cancel temporary mail
forwarding. Couldn't be easier.

Has the added benefit of getting rid of a lot of junk mail, but you also
want to put all your magazine subscriptions on hold and make sure your
credit cards aren't going to expire while you're gone. The forwarding
address results in magazine addresses being changed permanently and new
credit cards will be returned to the issuing bank and the account put on
hold (you won't be able to use the card - not a good idea when cruising).

Also want to let your credit card issuer know that you'll be traveling
so they don't get worried when they see some charges outside your
"normal" area. Most will let you do this online now; if not, give them a
call.

This past year we came home for a month or so part way through our
cruise and cancelled the temporary forwarding at USPS but kept the UPS
store address. When we resumed our cruise we also restarted the
temporary forwarding by USPS (had the effect of restarting the 6 month
period).

Bob:

We had looked at the UPS Store etc etc. However in 2010 we signed up with St Brendan's Isle in Green Cove Springs Fl. Their Rates are reasonable and they have over 4,000 customers who travel via boat, R.V. or whatever. St Brendan was the Patron Saint of Travelers. If you look at any roster such as MTOA , Defever Cruisers etc you will see a lot of folks using their addresses as Green Cove Springs, FL. That is St Brendan's Isle. You get an email each time you get mail and when you log in to their site you see the envelopes or magazine covers they have received. So now you know what they are holding for You .
You can use the menu to tell them to put it in your Send Box, Not Mine, Shred it, Save it, Scan it etc. If you think it is something important  you can tell them to SCAN it to you and you will have a PDF copy shortly.

When you give them a shipping address it goes into a menu of yours and is saved,  if you want to use the same address or go back to a previous one used you drag down the address and click on it. You can specify how you want the mail sent UPS via various selections, Overnight, 1-3 Business Days or use FedEx or USPS. Your choice. All mail released by 1200 Noon ships that day in an envelope that is waterproof and indestructible.

Your dealing with one company not various UPS stores that may be owned by different franchisee's. You get to know them and they know you. When they ship your mail you get an email complete with a tracking number and you click on the tracking number and it takes you right to USPS or UPS and you can keep track of exactly where you mail is at any time of day and know exactly when it will arrive.  This is some profession organization.

Each piece of mail they receive they put a Bar Code label on when it is Received and when it is shipped to you each piece of mail gets another Bar code label.
They loose NOTHING. You can get transaction reports. No fuss or muss
with change of address cards with the Postal Service.

The folks on the list who do not know about St Brendan's Isle need to
seriously check them out. Call Scott at 904- 284-1200 or visit their Website
link:  https://www.sbimailservice.com/

We wait until we have 8 or 10 pieces of mail, we always know exactly what they are holding and release it for shipment when we want it .I have no financial interest in SBI

Interesting Note: I was at a dock party one night and me and this other fella I met where bragging about our Mail forwarding Service. Turned out we both had St Brendan's Isle.
