Defever Underway Noise Level

Hello,

I'm in the early stages of considering the purchase of a 49' Defever with 2
ford lehman (120 hp ea) and a 12.5 kw Pulsar with no sound shield.  It is an
mid 1980's model year.  The engine room has sound shielding but it doesn't
look too substantial; just minimum basic.

Boat is on the hard and I'm curious if anyone out there has experience with
the noise level in pilot house while underway.  Just trying to gather some
facts for decision time.

Thanks,

Phil Bolin

I have a 41 Sea Ray 410 aft cabin motor yacht. There is sound shield on the
floor, but the Onan has no sound shield, wish it did. I have twin CAT's and
underway, the noise level is moderate but I don't really mind when underway
at all, part of cruising. However, the Onan without the sound shield when
running and no engine noise, is a bit annoying. It's pretty tight and I
don't know what a sound shield cost but am going to look into it if I can
put it in myself. For the most part I don't use the generator except when
cooking or having to run the air. I'm installing an inverter and a separate
8D battery so that I can run the frig when at anchor, which is what we
mostly do. Wish I had propane frig and stove, but that quite expensive and
you have to find a place for the 2 - 40 lb tanks. I did this on my last boat
but I don't have any spare room for tanks except the aft sundeck, and I
don't want to loose that space. My guess is that like my boat, you will find
the noise lever of the generator a bit more than you wish, unless you shield
it.

I was looking for a Defever, but couldn't find anything I could afford. Very
nice vessel for sure. I also like the Sea Ray 410, for it has two nice sized
staterooms and the layout is great. Cramped engine room but it's only a 41
ft. Got a really good buy on this boat for the CAT's are NEW, not rebuilt,
only 330 hours, new garmin GPS and Radar, autopilot, new canvas/lined, with
dingy and davit so I couldn't pass it up at the price. Just got it and love
it.
Great luck with the Defever. Where are you located?
