Cruising Report - Trent Severn Mid and Upper - 7/10/07

The weather is unseasonably warm. The nights cool down late, and are adequate
for sleeping without the generator. Our boat is 46' with a 4' 4" draft and we
have hit sunken wood, dead heads five times, all in the channel. One hit just
past the dual markers out of Bobcaygen took a section off a blade off causing
a hall out further along @ Lagoon City, on Lake Simco.
The boat we were following was a 3' 6" draft and they also found sunken wood,
but suffered no damage.
Today 7/10/07 tornados, high wind gusts, power outages, and short but strong
bands of rain.
Our marina lost power in the afternoon and has an estimate of six hours to
get it back up. They are on the end of a very long feeder line.
Prop strike story's abound in the Trent this year.
And its not just there, boaters trying for gunk holes in the 30,000 islands
are bending shafts, props, struts and flat out removing rudders. Up here speed
does not kill, it just costs and incredible amount to repair. In both time and
money. We are on the Canadian Shield, translate that to ROCK, ROCK and more
unforgiving ROCK.
That is not to say boaters with drafts of 4' 6" should not travel the Trent.
But they MUST be aware of the possible costs involved in doing so. We will be
heading back in about a week.
The worst stretches of the TS are the same every year, PS: this is our fifth
year on the system. The low spot on the Trent Canal that we charted in 2001 is
still there. Regular boaters all know about it and "coast" over it. This is
not meant to be an addition to a cruising guide, just a general report as to
what we found. Were here because we love the waterway, it should not be missed.
But it takes "luck" as well as good seamanship to make it through.

Regards,
Capt. James Clausen, MV Summer School
Cruising the Lake Ontario, Rideau Canal, Trent Severn Canal,
St. Lawrence Seaway, and Georgian Bay, the Summer of 2007

Bill:

On another list I belong to there has been a lot of discussion about
boats having their dock lines untied or cut in the night. This has
occurred on the Trent-Severn. Have you heard or seen any of this? The
recommendation was made to use a cable looped through the dock cleat
and locked on your boat.

An old cruising  friend of mine has made an offer on a Krogen 42 and needs a
pickey surveyor to give it a going over with a fine tooth comb.  Please get
back to me with any personal experiences you have had with surveyors in this
area.  Thanks.

Mark, when we had a contract on a Defever 41 in the Norfolk area over a year ago we used Kirby Smith for the surveyor. He did a great job - very thorough and seemed to know boats. As I recall he's been in the business for 20 years.

Kirby Smith's office phone number is 804-642-4454; cell phone number is 804-824-4504.

Have used Harbour before, and was happy with his work. I've talked to
Schacht who is highly recommended by a retired surveyor friend and had
planned to use him on a purchase that fell through for other reasons.  I'd
personally trust either one.
