In the old days, there used to be a spray bottle around the pumps with some
soapy solution to spray on a diesel/gasoline fueling spill....dispersing the
oily sheen.
More recently we've been told not to do that as it makes it the worse for the
environment, just let the spill go it's way and evaporate.
Using the soap (dishwashing detergent, a low cost/tech dispersant) just moved
the spill problem into the water column.
Now, if you're leaking a million gallons per day (as good an estimate as many)
into a big body of water (the Gulf, Loop Current and the world's oceans)
.....and then mixing different dispersants (questioned toxicity?) deep at the
leak site as well as spraying what's left of it rising to the surface
.....where do you think that mixed brew of crude oil is going?
Some is evaporating into the air
Some is remaining on the surface spreading about and also becoming thicker,
Some is mixing into the water column naturally
Some is being chemically dispersed into the air and the water column
Oil is biodegradable, but how long until the natural processes kick in, let
alone deal with the problem?
And how much damage will be done to the many ecosystems?
Every day right now, this scares me a little more.
We had planned to be back in the FL panhandle in a few months
Now we're not sure where we'll be going!
