Is my perception correct, that if you take a tow in the open ocean, the
person giving the tow may have salvage rights to your boat? I recall
reading an article in PassageMaker, where an ill prepared skipper left the
coast of France, undermanned, and with a failing boat. When the boat
finally failed in mid ocean, he radioed for help, was taken in tow by a
passing ship, and upon arrival was given a bill for a huge sum of money.
Not being able to pay, he simply signed the boat over. I may be
oversimplifying this, but it brings up the question of what happens if you
are towed in the open ocean? Thanks, Scott.

One of the things that I was most grateful for was that no agreement of any
kind was required by the towboat. Towboat US has had people sign salvage
agreements on occasionally on the ICW and other interior waters.
I think my unlimited coverage with Towboat US is $1350 per incident. I think
that if the tower believes it will cost more, they ask you to sign an
agreement to protect their financial interest.
Thank God for the PONCA,
