Tom,

We installed the Interphase Probe (forward looking + down) two years ago
on our 36ft Carver Mariner which we use on the Chesapeake Bay.  It is
"fantastic" and I would highly recommend the unit.  It won't keep you
from hitting bottom at a high speed, but going into an anchorage area or
cove it is great.  Keep in mind that you have to be looking at it to
tell you are going into shallow water.  I can even see the fish swimming
under the boat in front of mine across the fairway in my marina.  It
does take some practice to learn how to use it properly, just as you
have to do with radar.

Bottom line, it is well worth the investment!!!

Is there anyone out there  that has had experience using Interphase's
forward looking sonar/depth sounder while running "The Loop"?  I am
thinking of installing one on a trawler that we are planning to
purchase. Thinking it just might pay for it self if it will prevent us
from running into things under the surface that can't be seen from
above.

Is there anyone out there that has had experience using Interphase's forward looking sonar/depth sounder while running "The Loop"? I am thinking of installing one on a trawler that we are planning to purchase. Hi Tom,

I don't have one of these but I've hear nothing good about them. They can only look forward to a small degree and that is based upon how deep the water is. In shallow water they can only look a few feet forward of a normal vertical depthfinder. Not enough time to do anything even at our speeds. Also got reports of muddy water diminishing the readability. Didn't seem worth bothering to install. <== opinion from the cheap seats.

John, Your positive experience with the Itnerphase Probe is the first
one I have seen. Everyone else reports less than satisfactory results.
In using your unit have you experienced that the range which you can see
ahead is a function of the depth of the water? And if so when you are in
the shallow waters we often experience in the Chesapeake Bay anchorages
how far do you estimate you are picking up a contact on the display?
Thanks, Mike.
