Teacher Bio:
Susan Bakken graduated from the U of W in 1978 and taught kindergarten through 8th grade in Oroville, WA for 8 years. Upon returning to the Tacoma area, Susan taught Music, Drama, Visual Art and Dance in the Tacoma Public Schools for 33 years.  She received her masters from SPU in 1994.  Susan wrote and directed many plays and songs during her teaching career, which included the 1989 celebration of Washington State, "A Washington Tale" and a "D.A.R.E" musical which highlighted the collaboration of Tacoma Public Schools with the Tacoma Police Department. She took her 66-member elementary choir to perform at King 5 Winterfest and won 3rd place two times. During her teaching career she wrote and was awarded many grants to support Multicultural Music Education for all her students. Some of these grants purchased a Yamaha Keyboard lab, 17 Lanikai Ukuleles, Street Bucket Drums, and Digeridoos.  One particular grant purchased time with several Elders from neighboring tribes, in which the four 3rd grade classes participated in making a Native American drum for their classroom. In 1994 Sue received the Christa McCullough Washington State Teacher of the Year Award. Her latest production was to transform The Nutcracker story, to reflect the cultures and traditions of her students at Stafford Elementary. In collaboration with Tacoma Arts Live, and the Asia Pacific Cultural Center, students learned dances not only from the Russian Ballet, but Samoan drumming, chant and song, to the Vietnamese Dragon Dance, and Jarabe Tapatio dance from Mexico.
