It now occurs to me that my application (4,000 pound gross center console,
planing hulls) was to get out of Galveston in a hurry to spots 70 miles
offshore, fish like crazy and run back in. The 140s were being pushed very hard
and I suspect that my use could have been the cause of some of the problems.
They were not badly maintained (just the opposite) or mistreated, just run
hard and fast. Because the hulls (and passengers) could take the speed, the
engines may have paid the price, though.
I do think that the fuel injected v-6 is a better all around choice, not the
least of reasons being the "bottom" of the engine family I referred to in my
earlier post.
Also, sorry to hear of your recent problems. You certainly have my best
thoughts coming your way. I have enjoyed your posts in the past on this and the
Multihull list.
Best.
Phil.
I can see the issue. The V-4 I have is carburetors and tuning is a
hassle as is adjusting the oil injection.
The 140 on the excursion ran at about 3600 rpm with a 5000 max
The DT 100 I am running at 4200 with a 5400 max.
Propping it was a real hassle but is on a Power Tri so no precedent.
I always want more power and run at a 80% level.
