Request for Oral History Collection Data: Student Protest Archives Project
The HBCU Library Alliance is excited to share the next phase of our Student Protest Archives Oral History and Digitization Project and we invite your institution’s participation.
Interest Formhttps://ogrzxj.clicks.mlsend.com/ty/cl/eyJ2Ijoie1wiYVwiOjc1NjU0NixcImxcIjoxNTczODQxMzg5NDc1NjA2MTIsXCJyXCI6MTU3Mzg0MTUyODUyNzI3MjU3fSIsInMiOiIxYmUyYTI2M2UxMmEwYjE2In0
Project Overview
Thanks to a grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, we are launching the Empowering HBCU Libraries with Civil Rights Preservation, Digital Innovation, and Transformative Professional Development initiative.
A key component of this work is the Student Protest Archives Oral History and Digitization Project, which seeks to:
-Preserve and digitize oral histories documenting student-led protests at HBCUs.
-Engage 10–20 HBCUs in identifying collections that spotlight civil rights activism and campus organizing.
-Provide $11,250 subgrants to support digitization, metadata improvement, and enhanced accessibility.

Conceptual Focus
Our team is exploring deeper thematic questions as part of this work, including:
Defining Protest: What differentiates micro protests from major movements?
Identity and Protest: How do race, gender, and age influence protest participation and documentation?
Narrative Framing: Whose stories are preserved and how are they shared?
These questions will inform how collections are contextualized on our Celebrating the Collections of Historically Black Colleges and Universitieshttps://ogrzxj.clicks.mlsend.com/ty/cl/eyJ2Ijoie1wiYVwiOjc1NjU0NixcImxcIjoxNTczODQxMzg5NTU5NDkyNDIsXCJyXCI6MTU3Mzg0MTUyODUyNzI3MjU3fSIsInMiOiI0YzM2NmQ4NGE3ZDA4YzUyIn0 digital archive, in partnership with the AUC Woodruff Library Digital Services Department.
What We’re Requesting
We kindly ask your support in submitting existing oral history collection data from your institution that meet the project’s scope. Please complete the Interest Form and return it by July 16, 2025.
Key information we’re seeking includes:
Collection Overview: Title, institution, description, and core themes
Content Details: Total interviews, formats (audio/video/transcripts)
Metadata & Access: Standards used, accessibility features
Digitization Status: File formats, preservation methods
Legal/Ethical Info: Rights, permissions, consent documentation
Need more information? We’re happy to schedule a brief meeting to walk through your collections or discuss next steps.
