I tried this a couple of times. My takeaway was that the process was painful, and I quickly gave up. If anyone has had more success, I'm very interested in hearing about it, though!

Yeah. OpenSCAD is such a powerful tool, it's the best at what it does. We can't expect it to do everything, e.g. render an animation scene with complex lighting and textures. However, it would certainly make sense to think about how to add a "join layer" which would allow for an easy transition into using tools such as Blender.
I am going to be working on a strategy for the next few days. I would like to share my findings, if I find anything useful.
