Celebrate Puget Sound Starts Here Month in May

The City of Tacoma is teaming up with more than 750 organizations across the region to celebrate Puget Sound Starts Here month. During the month of May, a calendar of eventshttp://www.pugetsoundstartshere.org/events-list/ offers activities to help residents experience the benefits of living near the Puget Sound and engaging in Sound-healthy behaviors.

Local events in Tacoma include:

  •     7th Annual Tacoma Bike Swap: Sat. May 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at University of Puget Sound Fieldhouse (N. 11th St. and Union Ave.). For more Bike Month activities, visit BIKE253.com<http://www.exit133.com/bike253>.
    
  •     Workshops on Composting, Worm Bins, Rain Barrels, Rain Gardens and more:  Weekends at the EnviroHouse (3510 S. Mullen St.). For more information and to pre-register, visit cityoftacoma.org/envirohouse<http://www.cityoftacoma.org/cms/One.aspx?portalId=169&pageId=17243>.
    
  •     Puget Creek Restoration Society<http://www.pugetcreek.org/> Stormwater Symposium: Tues. May 12, from 5-8 p.m., at the Center for Urban Waters (326 E. D St.)
    
  •     Puget Sound Starts Here Family Fun Day<http://www.pugetsoundstartshere.org/events-list/>: Sat. May 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Foss Waterway Seaport (705 Dock St.)
    
  •     Puget Sound Starts Here with the Tacoma Rainiers: Sun. May 31, game time 1:35 p.m., at Cheney Stadium (2502 S. Tyler St.)
    

Other ways to get involved include:

  •     Apply for a Make A Splash Grant<http://www.cityoftacoma.org/cms/one.aspx?objectId=9827> for a reimbursement of up to $4,000 to complete a project to help prevent stormwater pollution.  Applications are due Friday, May 22.
    
  •     Visit the EnviroHouse<http://www.cityoftacoma.org/cms/one.aspx?objectId=17140> , complete the Puget Sound scavenger hunt, and take home a Puget Sound Starts Here themed prize.
    
  •     Choose to use a professional car wash or wash your car on grass or gravel to keep suds off the streets and keep oil, heavy metals and toxic chemicals out of Puget Sound. Visit pscarwash.org<http://www.pscarwash.org>  for more tips.
