John Walton, the Wal-Mart heir who died Monday when his homemade,
experimental aircraft crashed, was the founder of Corsair Marine, the
company that produces a successfull line of folding sailing trimarans
and recently introduced the Corsair 22 Foiler, a foil-assisted power
catamaran.

I remember John from the 1980s when he entered a cruising trimaran he
owned at the time in the first speedsailing grand prix I organized in
Long Beach, California, and later participated in the Open Transpac I
promoted, from Long Beach to Hawaii. From Hawaii, he sailed on to
cruise the South Pacific before returning to the U.S. to start up
Corsair Marine in the San Diego area. He sold Corsair Marine about a
decade ago to join the family business.

John was such a quiet, unassuming fellow that it was years after
meeting him that I realized he was a member of the Wal-Mart clan.
