Cruising America's Great Loop and other inland routes
View all threadsWell, I got several dozen emails about the John Deere tractor photo, so
I'll answer them all together. That photo was taken right after the Fort
Edward Heritage Days Parade, our annual celebration here on the Champlain
Canal.
It is a 1954 John Deere farm tractor, 59 years old and in perfect restored
condition, the engine is a 321 cubic inch 2-cylinder gasoline. Nearly
nothing on horsepower but acres of brute force torque to get the plow
moving. The big green round thing hanging on the side of the engine is a
very heavy flywheel.
You can put it in any one of the dozen gears and the flywheel will lurch
you forward instantly no matter what.
There is no suspension at all, the axles are bolted directly to the frame.
Not even springs under the seat. Running over an acorn sends a lurch right
up your spine.
The yellow plates stacked up on the sides of the big wheels are weights, a
couple of thousand pounds on each side. They guarantee traction no matter
what you're pulling. I think you could yank trees out with this monster.
Out here in the sticks of Fort Edward, a major dairy area, fathers teach
their young daughters to always go for the man with the GREEN tractor, a
John Deere. If those are all taken, they can get a man on an orange
tractor if they have to. Orange tractors would be a Case-IH, or Kubota, or
Massey Ferguson or Farmall. But Dear daughter, whatever you do, don't
shame the entire family by bringing home a man with a blue tractor, a Ford.
Granny would literally die of shame if you did that to us.
So there I go, on a joyride around town irresistible in John Deere green,
to the admiration of all the local babes.
Only problem I have not yet worked out, is the fact that most of the local
babes are larger than I am, are heavily tattooed and have 5-6 small
children each. It was rather a scarey joyride for that reason, but
otherwise fun fun fun.
Plan on visiting the Fort Edward Yacht Basin during Heritage Days next
year. Who says the locals don't know how to have fun!
Later in the season is the county fair, where these tractors get into a
tractor pull.
Here's a picture from the wheel, while driving thru traffic. Cars really
do get out of your way with these things:
