8/30/19, 4:00-6:00 AM — American Legion State Forest, Barkhamsted
Last night I camped out at American Legion State Forest (for literally no reason). In the morning before sunrise, exceptionally low cloud cover with the added impetus of very low temperatures brought well over 100 migrating VEERIES in hearing range. At one point, I counted 100 flight calls in less than three minutes. Though it is certainly difficult to judge, I would estimate there were between 150 and 225 birds. There were smaller numbers of scarlet tanager, rose-breasted grosbeak, and ovenbird — classic August migrants all.
These flights are extremely exhilarating to observe. To think these calls have resounded through this forest for thousands of years!
